It was the last day on the island.
Woke up around 8:00 am. Went to Hapuna beach, which was beautiful but relatively crowded. Met a lady who took a lot of great pictures for us using our Nikon D90. Hapuna beach is classic and easy to access, which is good for tourists. However, if you want a quiet place, this might not be the number one choice. So far, the beach in Topsail State Park, FL is still the best beach I've been to.
Went back to hotel to wash clothes while taking a shower and packing. It was so nice that our resort has complimentary laundry room. The resort even allowed us to stay and use all sorts of facilities after checking out. If you have a late flight and want to take a shower before boarding, they are happy to arrange it for you, too.
But instead of staying in the resort, we headed north to Hawi town. Hawi is a small historical town with few restaurants and shops. Had lunch at a special restaurant called Bamboo. The building is 100 years old and was owned by a local Hawaiian family and then a Japanese merchant before it became Bamboo. Their menu showed a detailed history.
Went to Pololu Valley after that. Drove all the way north to the end of hwy 270. The view from the top was already very impressive. Also hiked down for about 15 min to see the valley and black sand beach and it was worth it. Nothing was hard compared to the 1-hr hike at Captain Cook Monument.
Headed south to Kona and stopped on the way to take some good shots for sunset. Eventually had dinner at Kona (Hump's on Alii Dr) and bought some coffee and macadamia for friends in GA. Went to return the car before 10:00 pm and took the shuttle to the airport. Wish we could stay longer but it has been good enough.
It was a wonderful trip except that there were quite a few roaches in the rental car. Went back to change to an SUV on the second day but still saw them in the car. Friend's rental car had them, too. Guess it's Hawaii. Warm climate for every creature. Should have learned how to live with them but I was too scared.
Sitting in the plane to finish this diary. Had some flight issues on our way back but finally had it all sorted out. Will explain this in the next diary because technically it's the next day already.
